This includes, but is not limited to, the Washington State Ferries. Post-Sept. 11 security zones prohibited boaters from approaching within 100 yards of U.S. military vessels and tankers; and operate at minimum speeds within 500 yards. The Coast Guard is now also imposing security zones in the vicinity of all passenger vessels more than 100 feet in length. "The U.S. Coast Guard is taking appropriate security measures consistent with the change in the Homeland Security Advisory System level," said Capt. Danny Ellis, Commanding Officer, Marine Safety Office Puget Sound. "We are working closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies; port leaders; and industry representatives to safeguard the security of the port, waterways, and facilities." In addition, boaters are reminded: Observe and avoid all security zones; information is broadcast on marine-band radio. Avoid commercial port operations. Do not stop or anchor beneath bridges or in the channel. Stay vigilant and keep a sharp eye out for anything that looks peculiar or out of the ordinary. Anyone observing something out of the ordinary should contact the appropriate law enforcement officials.
