GENERAL NOTES FROM MARCH 28, 2006 BOATERS MEETING SPONSORED BY THE TACOMA NARROWS CONSTRUCTORS

TACOMA NARROWS BRIDGE BOAT TRAFFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR SUMMER 2006

  1. Starting in June, three big ships will arrive from Korea carrying 46 huge roadway bridge deck sections and the lifting operations will commence.
  2. From mid June through September, off and on, there will be a ship permanently stationed between the western tower of the bridge and the shore on the Gig Harbor side.
  3. The huge roadway deck sections will each be transferred from the ship to a lifting BARGE to ferry each deck section to the middle spans directly under the bridge crane. They will be lifted from the barge to the bridge roadway deck for installation.
  4. BOATERS ARE REQUIRED TO KEEP 500 FEET AWAY FROM THE SHIP AND THE LIFTING BARGE ON ALL SIDES. You can pass between the barge and the ship as long as you keep 500 feet away from each.
  5. There will be no other obstructions in the Narrows except for the Ship and the Barge. Stay 500 feet away from each. Note: There is 2800 feet in between the two middle caissons so ample room will be available.
  6. The barge will be equipped with thrusters and GPS for exact positioning under the bridge crane for lifting.
  7. Lifting operations will be at or near slack water. There will be no lifting operations in heavy fog or winds over 25 mph. There will be no lifting operations on Sunday.
  8. There will be no VHF communication with bridge construction operations, however the crews will hail you with a bullhorn if you get too close.
