Marine Parks Forever
B.C. Marine Parks Forever Society

What's this all about? Why is RBAW concerned with Parks in Canada? Don't we have enough work to do already with our own State Parks here is Washington? Well yes, but if you visit any Marine Park in B.C. on a busy summer day, you'll see a large percentage of boats flying American flags & Puget Sound Burgees. Since Washington boaters are a big user of B.C. Marine Parks, we should do all we can to help them. RBAW is interested in improving boating in local waters. Our next door neighbors welcome us in their Parks in the Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, and Desolation Sound. These Parks provide us with lifetime boating vacation memories and unsurpassed northwest beauty. So here's the deal.

RBAW's sister organization in Canada is the Council of B.C. Yacht Clubs (CBCYC). The Marine Parks Forever Society (MPF) was created in 1989 by the CBCYC which represents the interests of B.C. boaters, just like RBAW does here in Washington. The MPF Society encourages and assists the Government in purchasing private land and "Crown" land for Marine Parks.

What has the CBCYC & MPF Society accomplished? The CBCYC played a key role in acquiring the prestigious "Pirates Cove Marine Park" on DeCourcy Island and Wallace Island. Thereafter the MPF Society was formed and the Society has accumulated over $600,000 to date. Purchases include $45,000 towards Musket Island (a small island just off the SW end of Hardy Island at the entrance of Jervis Inlet), $100,000 towards Jedediah Island, $75,000 towards the purchase on of a 45 acre property on Hardy Island adjoining Musket Island, $100,000 towards the purchase of Wakes Cove Marine Park (N. portion of Valdes Isl.-Gabriola Pass), and $250,000 to cover the entire purchase price for 35 acres to extend Octopus Islands Marine Park.

The Society is tasked with finding ways and means to collect funds for the purpose of providing seed money to government to attain suitable Park properties. Government funding available for acquisition of new Marine Parks is very limited and without outside help from private sources, few new Marine Parks will be forthcoming.

If you are a user of the wonderful B.C. Marine Park system, a donation would be very appreciated and appropriate from south of the border. Your entire donation is applied to the purchase of Parks because all Society members are volunteers and there is no overhead. It's up to us boaters to show our governments the way to help create more Marine Parks while these opportunities still exist. For more information call Steve Macdonald at 604-929-5050 or visit the MPF Society website at: http://www.cbcyachtclubs.ca/marineparks
